Architectural Studio 4 Project 2: Nature Appreciation Center

Location: Pulau Banding, Perak

Task

Pulau Banding is an artificial island located admist the 130 million year-old Royal Belum Rainforest. Its complex diversity of biology has proves to be of importance to be protected and envisioned to be a destination of ecotourism.

This project requires students to propose a nature appreciation centre accommodating multiple relevant facilities. Clustered spatial typology and passive design approach are to be explore as a design solution towards a minimal environmental impact. Design concept for the poetic experience within the centre is to be conceived through extensive research of the macro and micro site, along with an informed responses to its natural context. Ultimately, the design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.

Site Analysis

Nature Appreciation Centre

The design is conceptualized from the circulation patterns of the rainforest. Nagivation through the forest is shaped by the surrounding natural elements such as rivers and rocks. Different regions of the rainforest constitute different micro topography. The nature and attribute of these elements is analysed, simplified and finally employed as a poetic experience of the centre along different sectors

Reflection

Clustered architectural design and environmental poetic in spatial layout is two major emphasis in this project. These design consideration improves the spatial functionality and circulation of the building. The resulting interconnection of the various segregated spaces and the surrounding context allows the users understand the spatial navigation and provide a comfortable journey of the poetic experience. Conceptualization from the site analysis also enable the connection between users' experience and the natural context as it contributes to the site familiarity of the building. Conclusively, the understanding that user experience is the collaboration of the natural context and architectural language serve as strong design approach in my future design work.
